Lions earn distinction as NFL's worst team

So that's what the Lions look like on television, and how they sound on radio. That's why the folks sitting and home have been so upset for so long.

The view is different from the stadium and the press box, but the result of what we saw in Sunday's opening game at Atlanta -- for one week, anyway -- was all too familiar. I saw that same performance, that same result, many times in the 31 seasons I covered the Lions as the full-time beat writer for The Detroit News.

There is a word to describe the 34-21 stink-out in Atlanta. Trouble is, we aren't allowed to use it in a family newspaper, including the online version. We probably couldn't even sneak it past the censors on cable TV.

Inept? Woeful? Embarrassing? Humiliating?

It was all of that and more. It might have been the worst performance by any team in the first week of the NFL season.
