scattergun for tree rats
I want to try squirrel hunting. I have never done it before.
The place I was going to try only allows muzzleloaders and shotguns. I have 12 gauges but don't think the boy would care for the recoil, muzzleblast and weight. I don't care to haul one of those heavy rigs either after back surgery. I am thinking of cheap light weight single shots. My question is - is a 410 enough for tree rats or should I get 20s?
All my muzzleloaders are big bores and the cap and ball revolvers are not considered muzzleloaders.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

Shotguns & tree rats
Dear Charley, My experience is that a .410 shotgun is plenty for squirrels ( I will never think of them again without thinking of your "tree rats" ) True there is less recoil & they are much lighter. I don't know how old your boy is, but a .410 is the perfect shotgun to learn on. I recently purchased a single shot .410 for myself so I could hunt with my nephew. Once your boy wants a bigger shotgun think about a 20 gauge. It has just as much range & knock down power as a 12 gauge but less kick. I just read an article about this argument in Field & Stream. It really just your perference. Also for squirrels & small game, Gamo makes an adult precision air gun (.177 pellets) that travels 1200 to 1600 fps which will work too. When we were young boys, my brother & cousin used .22 cal rifles to shoot squirrels. But enough about tree rats. Jimmy B

How old is he and what size? If he can handle it I'd probably spring for the 20, in case the need arises it would be more versatile.

I use a 20 with full choke. I can't get the wife to try it though.

Just try the Shoti, they are A LOT of fun, and GREAT for hunting. But I will use my uncles AR-15 over them ANY day, only thing is, there are only a handful of RIFLE counties in my area.
