I used WD-40 to clean my Browning Citori

Just not in the way you might think. The Browning was purchased originally in 1989 by my father-in-law. I bought it fro him last year. The gun is mint.
But you will notice the “saddle” on the butt stock that he had put on to raise the cheek piece. It was functional for him but always an eyesore to me. Not to mention, I feel more comfortable shooting without it. It is held on but a Velcro strip on either side of the stock. I have always been leery about trying to take it off though lest removing those stuck on Velcro strips damage the finish in some way. But the other night I was looking at it and I just couldn’t resist the urge to test pulling one up any more. So I did and it became very obvious that the strip would come off without pulling up any finish but would leave the adhesive all over the stock like when you pull of duct tape that has been on for a long time. Here’s where the WD-40 comes in. Perhaps the most useful thing for WD-40 in my mind is to remove residue adhesive or to take stickers off things. It works better for that than removing rusty nuts I think. Anyway, in several minutes of extreme anxiety, I slowly removed those Velcro strips being very cautious not to damage the stock. Then I used WD-40 to dissolve the adhesive slowly but surely. Then I cleaned off the WD-40 with a Windex type cleaner. It looked pretty good but you could clearly see where the adhesive was as the finish was slightly duller there. So, part deux, out with the high-gloss wood polish (woodworking is another hobby of mine so I had it on hand) and put on a coat of polish, let it dry and buffed it off. Did pretty good but held up to the light I could still barely see where the Velcro was. So into the case it went for the night to make sure the polish hardened completely before I did another coat. So last night I took it out and did another coat, let it dry and buffed it out. Perfection! I cannot see any hint that the Velcro was ever there. I can’t tell you how relieved I was that it turned out so well. I would have been so angry with myself if I had screwed up that gun. Not to mention my wife, she loves that gun. Just thought I’d share my harrowing tale of WD-40, see it wasn’t as bad as the subject sounded
