Upcoming Review(s)!
I will, in short time (most likely Wednesday evening) be reviewing the BlackHawk Tactical SERPA Stage 2 holster.
Allow me to post an image...
Ok, 2 things
- For one, I do not use a Glock, nor do I have a freakin' laser pointer (rediculous) on my firearm
- Secondly, I don't understand what purpose the "paddle" system serves as showed in the image, but, I prefer the ' belt loop ' system. Looks less stupid.

- I ordered mine in Carbon Fiber finish. Down with drab, Down with matte finish.
- Todd Jarrett has a video, (which I will post a link to on my Videos Thread) which shows him timing his draw-and-fire. The time added to his draw-and-fire was roughly .10 seconds added with a SERPA level 2 holster. Not bad at all!
- I will be using this holster, in conjunction with a 1.5" pistol belt, to train and practice my draw. So, if I come across any hitches or bad things, you will hear about it
- Finally, I will update this post later on with more stuff after I use it!

The paddle I believe is so you can just slide it on your pants instead of clipping it to your belt!

So yeah, my history class let out almost 45 minutes early today
(normally runs for three hours)
That and my ammunition will arrive sometime today! HaPPyFaCe!
This holster will probably not arrive until thursday unfortunately, so the review won't occur until sometime this weekend, methinks.

The serpa is a good holster. I just don't like relying on a button to function to get my weapon out when I NEED my weapon.

Understandably so.
However, I plan to make it second nature, as with many other things throughout my training.

What I am trying to say is that I am concerned about the button NOT functioning when I need the gun.

I have a double retention holster, I have to unsnap it, then rock it back to get the weapon out. Having a button on the side would scare me a bit for the same reasons as Swattie stated, with the button on the side, what happens if I need to draw my weapon (have 3 times already), and the button wont work, then what.......I just say, F*ck it!!!!!!!

I can clearly understand your points of view on this topic. It is a no-bullsh1t issue. You are both already on-duty officers, and your preferences (clearly) do not lend themselves to pressing buttons on holsters. I respect this fact.
However, I ask you to look at my situation. It will be at the least, two years before I wear a badge, so, I will be training until then. By that time, using a retention holster will be complete instinct. (especially at the rate I choose to shoot)
Obviously, if I have any problems with the holster up until that point, I would seek other means of holstering my weapon.
Todd Jarrett Reviews Retention Holsters
Please, watch this video of Todd Jarrett using SERPA holsters. He shows that the difference between the time of draw is very little.

The button cannot fail to function. If anything, if it were to malfunction, it would fail to LOCK. You cannot be locked out of your weapon. That is one of the mottos of the SERPA line of holsters.
The "button" operates as a small fulcrum that rotates away from the trigger guard. The holster blocks the trigger guard from leaving. That is how the Level 2 SERPA holster functions. I have actually held one with a plastic training gun in it, to see how it worked first hand.
The "button" just moves small lever roughly 1/4th of an inch.
You do not have to snap anything, it locks automatically when placed into the holster.
Additionally, you can pull the weapon straight out, you do not have to modify your typical draw angle. As you can see, the holster is very open at the top, and does not limit the firearm very much in terms of angle.
If you are interested, you can watch a very descriptive video on the SERPA level 3 "duty" auto lock holster:

I will just stick with my level 2, just because I don't like all the "bells and whistles" on a duty holster.
