Crown Victoria Police Interceptor VS Dodge Charger, Chevrolet Impala
Lets face it, unless your departments used horses for the last 20 years, you've used a Ford Crown Victoria at some point. What are your guys' thoughts on these cars? And has anyone used the newer Chevrolet Impala or the Dodge Charger police packages? Im personally going to say that I prefer the Crown Victoria, the car is just an all around TANK, I've owned a 98' that was through its double duty, 150 000 kms as cruiser and another 200 000 as a taxi cab, didnt treat me bad, and still had the power if I needed it. Call em ugly, call me crazy, I love em.
Its the same chassis that it was 25 years ago, and the same motor since 1992. I say, if it isnt broke, dont fix it. What are your guys thoughts, do you prefer the old or the new?

I have personally drove all three of them, I like the tank I mean Crown Victoria, they take a beating and keep on ticking. The charger is nice, but the steering is very touchy, and not always the best. The impala is good only if you don't need to go over 50 mph, they would be good for maybe New York PD or other departments that don't patrol the highway, if you have to patrol the highway, you need either the charger or the CV.

We have imployed a 07 impala. Not a desirable unit. Transmission is slipping like crazy since new. Not to mention lack of space in the back for suspects-Then again the back of a unit isnt supposed to be comfortable. Car is also a heavy four door so front wheel drive isnt the best option. Overall I prefer the crown vic, although havent been in the new chargers yet. What other problems are the chargers experiencing, other than the sloppy steering.

I am a new officer so I have not driven the Crown Victoria other than once or twice in the academy. As far as The CV vs. the impala I would rather drive the CV. Much more power and RWD. The impalas I have driven are complete turds. Slow and FWD. I personally love the charger. TONS of power and handles great for the size car it is. As far as sloppy steering I have yet to drive one with sloppy steering and I have driven several of the with 60,000 and 70,000 miles. The steering in the Charger is crisp and very responsive. Maybe it is a diffrence in driving style and preferance but I wouldnt have anything else but highly responsive steering. I am sure that is what "DoubleTap" is referring as to "touchy". I personally like that because when you move the wheel the car turns.

Correct, it is VERY responsive steering. The CVPI and Charger both have their highs and low's, and I like both of them. CVPI has A LOT more power than the Impala.

Interesting tidbit for everyone to consider. According to some of the local PD guys I know the PD doesn't give them key fob for the door locks on the Charger. Therefor, if they have someone cuffed up and ready to transport they have to go around to the drivers door open it with a key and then press the unlock button. On the other hand on the Vic you can open any door with a key.
