A tribute to a dog.
The one absolutely unselfish friend that
a man can have in this selfish world,
the one that never deserts him,
the one that never proves ungrateful
or treacherous, is his dog.
A man's dog stands by him in prosperity
and in poverty,
in health and in sickness.
He will sleep on the cold ground where
the wintery winds blow,
and the snow drives fiercely,
if only he may be near his master's
side. He will kiss the hand that has no
food to offer, he will lick the sores
and wounds that come in encounter with
the roughness of the world. He guards
the sleep of his Pauper master as if he
were a prince.
When all other friends desert,
he remains.
When riches take wings and reputation
falls to pieces, he is as constant in
his love as the sun in it's journey
through the heavens.
If misfortune drives the master forth
an outcast in the world, friendless
and homeless, the faithful dog asks
no higher privilege than that of
accompanying him to guard against
danger, to fight against his enemies.
And when the last scene of all comes,
and death takes the master in it's
embrace, and his body is laid away in
the cold ground, no matter if all other
friends pursue their way, there by the
graveside will the noble dog be found,
his head between his paws, his eyes sad,
but open in alert watchfulness,
faithful and true, even in death.
-From a speech given by
Former Senator George Graham Vest
of Missouri. Delivered in 1870 when he
was acting as a lawyer in a suit against
a man who had killed the dog of his
client. -- He won the case.

Thanks redbird, I love dogs too, in fact better than a lot of people.
The other day while watching for a long light on a bridge to change I saw an old hobo with a medium size, black shaggy dog following him. There was a lot of traffic and the dog looked like it was afraid to go across. Just as the light changed I saw the old guy kneel down pick up the dog and started carrying him or her across. I wanted to go back and check but there was too much traffic.
Here's another one that'll leave you misty eyed.
"Make room in your heart"
Sorrow fills a barren space;
you close your eyes and see my face
and think of times I made you laugh,
the love we shared, the bond we had,
the special way I needed you -
the friendship shared by just we two.
The day's too quiet, the world seems older,
the wind blows now a little colder.
You gaze into the empty air
and look for me, but I'm not there -
I'm in heaven and I watch you,
and I see the world around you too.
I see little souls wearing fur,
souls who bark and souls who purr
born unwanted and unloved -
I see all this and more above -
I watch them suffer, I see them cry,
I see them lost, I watch them die.
I see unwanted thousands born -
and when they die, nobody mourns.
These little souls wearing fur
(Some who bark and some who purr)
are castaways who - unlike me -
will never know love or security.
A few short months they starve and roam,
Or caged in shelters - nobody takes home.
They're special too (furballs of pleasure),
filled with love and each one, a treasure.
My pain and suffering came to an end,
so don't cry for me, my person, my friend.
But think of the living -
those souls with fur
(some who bark and some who purr) -
And though our bond can't be broken apart,
make room for another in your home and
your heart.

Yeah. You're so right, SF. Dogs are better companions than people. It reminds me of a joke I heard, "What's the difference between a husband and a dog? The dog is still glad to see you after you've been together for a year."

Nope, a dog would never seek a separation or a divorce from it's master or mistress.

That's awesome and so very true, SF. I have 6 cats 5 of them, are rescues. They need me, but I think I need them more. I used to work with a cat rescue and have helped with 3 litters of kittens and numerous strays and castaway cats. I wish people would take responsibility for their animals and get them fixed. I always get very angry when I hear that people want their pet to "have one litter" or "they want their kids to see the Miracle of life", why not take those same kids to the animal shelter and let them see the end those little ones will most likely come to.

Here, here, Rose!! VERY well said. I get so sick of people saying, "It's just a cat." or "It's just a dog." Like the animal isn't worth anything. I guess to some people the animal isn't.

Nice poem! I notice it seem to be a common thing for homeless people to have a dog. I was thinking that wouldn't have enough to feed the dog but the dog does provides some companionship. Also, I notice that people care more about animals then people.

The homeless here also have dogs. When they go through the dumpster, everything that a dog might find tastey, they throw to their dogs. Sometimes I think the dogs eat better than the homeless people!!

I guess there are a lot of homeless dogs, too. I think that a dog will probably get more food than a homeless guy. Also, dogs are pretty good about finding food.
