Gunbattles rage on streets of Mexico border town; 13 dead
TIJUANA, Mexico - Massive gunbattles broke out between suspected drug traffickers who fired at each other while speeding down heavily populated streets of this violent border city early Saturday, killing 13 people and wounding nine. All of the dead were believed to be drug traffickers, possibly rival members of the same cartel who were trying to settle scores, said Rommel Moreno, the attorney general of Baja California state, where Tijuana is located.
"Evidently this is a confrontation between gangs," Moreno told reporters.
Eight suspects and one federal police officer were injured in the pre-dawn shootings, none gravely, said Agustin Perez Aguilar, a spokesman for the state public safety department. The suspects are being held on suspicion of weapons possession among other possible charges.
Police recovered 21 vehicles, many with bullet holes or U.S. license plates; a total of 54 guns; and more than 1,500 spent shell casings at various points in the city where the battles broke out, Perez Aguilar said.
At one point, the alleged traffickers fired at one another as their sport utility vehicles sped down a busy six-lane boulevard lined with restaurants, car repair shops, medical offices and strip malls.
Bullet holes could be seen in the walls of a factory building and on the perimeter wall of a housing complex along the road, but no bystander deaths were reported. It was not clear how long the gunbattles lasted.
A mall security guard who did not want to give his name for fear of reprisals said he heard hundreds of gunshots fired, some of which passed near him.
"I hit the ground," the guard said. When he got up again, he said he saw bullet holes in the wall behind him, a dead man lying in a pool of blood and 11 abandoned, bullet-ridden SUVs on the street.
The first shootout claimed seven victims. Three subsequent gunbattles — one outside a hospital — claimed five more, police said. The body of a man police believe to be the 13th victim turned up at a city hospital.
I think it's about time. . . and, then . . . or, maybe . . . of course there's always . . . and I'd be up for . . . not to mention . . . and the ultimate . . .

These guys were literally at war and I'm assuming that a lot of guns were involved. It was a miracle that any bystanders were not hurt.

For some reason, probably known only to God, no one but the bad guys and their targets get dead. These guys go through guns at a record rate due to their "throw away" policy. Here, I don't know in other states, they do the crime then throw the gun away about 10 minutes afterward. And I'm talking AK-47, AR-15, Glocks and 5.7s. Some officers here have brand new, only fired once, Bushmaster AK-47s thanks to the cartels!

I guess throwing away the gun helps with not being traced. I can tell the cartel is in control of the streets.

They have a formula. It works. All the bad guys arrested here in this state have been taken in for trafficking. Only one for murder. And that's the last 3 years. It works like this: 3 to 4 guys are sent to do the job. They all come from different cities and probably don't know each other. They arrive in a stolen car, go to the safe house and get guns, do the job, go straight to a pre-arranged meeting place, drop the guns, masks, gloves and even keys to the car. Hop in the second vehicle and drive safely and slowly back to the safe house. The last hit they did was a police officer. From the moment their car stopped, they got out, shot him about 20 times with AK-47s, got back in the car and drove only 12 seconds had elapsed. Pros.

Mexico sounds like a really dangerous place. Do the citizens complain a lot about the violence?

No, they don't. Ya have to remember all this took place at about 3 in the morning. Everyone was in bed. (Hence the joke we have here: "Don't leave for work too early in the morning, give the cops a chance to pick up all the dead bodies off the street first.") The war is between the cops and the narcos. And the narcos and the narcos. Citizens are left pretty much alone.
As to violent . . . YOU BET!!! There's nothing as violent as the Zetas. Was reading an article in KVOA Tucson News the other day. An ATF agent finally said what everyone here has known for years!!
"A former federal agent who infiltrated some of the drug cartels says, "They are extremely dangerous, dangerous beyond belief for the American public." "
And . . .
"Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms officials say 90 percent of weapons in Mexico come from Texas and Arizona.
Sig Celaya heads the Tucson ATF office. He says, "Do we consider it a big problem? Absolutely. There are over 20 million guns estimated in Mexico last year.""
"The former federal agent says, "They have no regard for life. You step on an ant... same thing to them as killing a person. They have no problem, no qualms, no second thought.""
KVOA News 4, Tucson, Arizona - Mexico drug cartels getting weapons from Texas and Arizona
This man KNOWS!! Amazing! Most criminals have some fear of LEO. Either because they fear being arrested or they fear being killed. These guys have NO fear of ANYthing or ANYone.
