Self Defense

Hello everyone,
Im new to the forum and ive already posted in that section...just wanted to make a separate post about my main question right now. I am an animal cruelty investigator in MI. Though some people think we're "dog catcher" others remember "animal cops" and how it can be dangerous and we dont just catch strays. Dog fighting cases, drug raids etc..thing can escalate quickly and ive been trained in very little self defense. (I know some basic things that surprisingly the average person probably doesn't think about.) Its really quite sad. I've learned apparently it depends on where you live, and where you work on if your department can afford to do much training... if at all.
I have been in some sketchy situations and happen to be good at talking the situation to be less escalated. Id like to also be more physically prepared just in case. I take this seriously and i hope to find some answers/opinions on here that aren't going to be a joke.

Suggestions on what type of self defense classes i could take? I've researched online a bit but wanted inside opinions. The point is i dont want to have to join the police academy to get that kind of training when i dont want to be a police officer specifically.

you can also PM me if preferred.

Push-ups, sit-ups, running...thats how you get physically fit enough to defend yourself. The officers I have talked to, and myself while in a fight at work...it's a "street fight" everything goes! When you are watching T.V. just pump out some pushups and situps!

The best advice I can give you would be to continue with your training, karate, self-defense classes, kick boxing, Mixed Martial Arts (this is what I do). Your voice is one of the best qualities you have, one of my co-workers can't fight very well, but she can talk her way out of any situation...play your strengths, don't do anything you don't feel comfortable with.

Self Defense

Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art system that was actually invented by a woman (Shaolin nun Ng Mei). It is predominantly a self defence art, is easy to learn the basics, doesn't rely on size or brute strength. It is based around natural body movements and embraces ideas like economy of movement and redirecting force to make it effective.

Victoria12,

Crossfit dot com has a daily workout plan on their web site. I started off doing 1/3 of what they had listed and worked my way up to the full workout. You have some days off and some days are so hard you think you're going pass out. Good luck!

VR,

JS.

I have a little experience in this line. 30 years a Cop in London (no guns for cops here). Your voice is the best weapon you posess, but when you need to use force do it hard.

Over the years I was taught various techniques by both Police and Special Forces trainers and without doubt the very best techniques were Akido. Don't try to learn a whole martial arts discipline. Just master a few moves that you can remember under stress and you're good to go.

Actually Flasheart, your BRAIN is the strongest weapon you can posess, but I agree your voice is your second best weapon, you hit someone hard with a verbal stun, gives you a little bit of time for you to put them down hard.

Flasheart, I am sorry you guys don't have guns I couldn't see being a police officer without a firearm. It is my understanding that more and more of you guys are beginning to carry firearms, that they are finally realizing that in order to do you job effectively you guys need to be able to protect yourselves from ALL attacks.

Nope, cops still unarmed here.

And the Voice is still the best weapon, talk someone into doing what you require them to do is the safest method.

All forces around the country have dedicated Armed Response Vehicles, that deal with calls that require them. You don't need a gun to do the job effectively. But I'm not saying you 'colonials' don't. Firearms are not owned by the general public, so the mindset required for our style of policing is totally different from yours.

It takes a person with intuition to talk themselves out of a situation. The people here have given some good advice as far as personal safety goes.I would suggest that if your 'senses'tell you it will get ugly..call the police so they can help you.

I agree that you need to talk to people to try to get them to go along with the program. Our style of policing is different from yours, because we do have to deal with people with guns on a almost weekly basis, depending on the area you patrol.

I agree that you have to be able to talk someone down, but, sometimes you have to PUT them down when talking fails, or you don't have time.

I 100 percent agree with the above posts, talking will carry you along ways. But, sometimes you just have to scrap. I'd suggest learning some basic strikes, take downs, holds, and restraints. Do a lot of cardio and strength training and get into some kind of class to learn the other stuff. Good luck!
