Hey guys, I am applying to a law enforcement agency in new york. I have never gotten into much trouble except for high school. I’m in college now getting my degree in criminal justice. I have never had an arrest record or criminal charges ever. Im clean as a whistle. I am also a resigned fire fighter from my hometown, I am currently in the coast guard auxiliary. My dream is to become a cop, my heart is in it and I want it so bad. I’m 22 years old. Alright now for the reason im on here!! I have one dark thing in my past……about 4 years ago, I had an argument with my mothers boyfriend. My parents had gotten a divorce and it was some troubling times for me. One day I kind of flipped out on my mothers new boyfriend. She called the cops and the cops came and my mother said that she didn’t want me to get arrested because she knew I was pursuing my dream of becoming a cop and she didn’t want me to have an arrest record. To make a long story short, I was admitted to a hospital for 4 days to be evaluated. I was released and saw a psychiatrist for less than a month and that was that. Now my question is, is this gonna effect my future and will this disqualify me? Or should I give it some time? Maybe like 25 years old then apply again. I’m doing cool stuff like the coast guard and school. I’m not a bad guy by any means. I love to work with people…but those four days in the hospital scare me that I will be disqualified.

Call the department you are going to be applying to and ask them. Different rules for different parts of the country. Some departments will allow it, others will DQ you because of your past history, call the department and ask.

Unfortunatly I agree with DT, call 'em and ask 'em, Cant' hurt. The one thing you need to remember is that you MUST be honest. Don't try to hide anything, 'cause they'll find out one way or another. In Police work all you have is your integrity, that's it. Be upfront and talk to them, tell them the whole story. If they don't like it, try again elsewhere.

There was no significant diagnosis, I was held in the hospital due to anger issues. They kept me there to make sure I didn’t do anything stupid and to see how I was. I was released and every document says I was “showing good behavior”, I was neat and presentable, respectable towards others. It was just a bad time in my life with my parents splitting up and everything at once flared my temper, im sure if I give it a year or two more and then apply to see my investigator, they will see all that I have accomplished in my life since that incident. This is what I hope will happen.

I’m just asking an opinion and I respect yours greatly. But I am still going to go for my goal of becoming a cop, and if there’s a small chance that I don’t get accepted…..then I’ll die knowing that I tried.

Having been put into an institution is going to look BAD on a background investigation. You may very well be fine today, but unfortunately for you what has happened in your past WILL make it VERY hard for you to become a police officer.

You stated that "everything at once flared my temper", guess what, as a police officer, everything($hit) could hit the fan all at once, and the department will want to know that you can maintain your calm under pressure. Now, I don't know you or your way of dealing with issues, but when you say that "everything at once flared my temper" seems like you may have another underlying issue. In this profession you can not let you emotions get to you during the course of your duties. After the situation is done and over, then you can deal with them, but during is not the time.

That is why they have phycological examinations for police officers, because this job can get very stressful really quick, and the department wants to know that you won't just tense up and lose your cool.

With that being said, I wish you the best of luck in getting hired. Just call the department and ask if it is an automatic DQ for them. Stick around here as well, you will get a lot of good information from officers on this site.
