It would be stupid NOT too wear one. And why would it matter what day of the week it is? Criminals don't take vacations.

Even in the UK Stab/bullet resistant vests are issued to all officers and are worn every day. (Although in some areas the officers may choose not to wear one).

What? Police need Bullet resistant vests in England? I thought guns were banned there?!?!

I guess the old addage is true. Ban guns and only outlaws will have guns.

I am not a police officer, however..

When I am in a car, I wear a seatbelt.
When I play Ice Hockey, I wear a neck protector (Goalie )

so... if I manage to become an officer.. I'll wear my vest!

I am a Corrections Officer and in charge of inmate transportation to and from our maximum security prison to other facilities, court, medical appointments, etc. It was not until August of last year that, after 6 years of fighting for BP vests, that we finally got enough for 12 of our 20 officers. These 12 are the ones who primarily conduct the largest number of inmate transports. We wear them every time we are outside of the facility, regardless of inmate custody classification. We conduct approx. 10 to 15 (or more) transports per week for various reasons and to various places. If you do not wear a vest during these situations and they are available to you, I think you are just plain crazy. There have been entirely too many complacent CO's killed in the line of duty throughout the US in the recent years. I would not be surprised, but I bet most would be if they looked into these deaths to see if the officers were wearing vests. I know that the majority were not. Wheter that is due to the depts lack of supplying the proper protective equip. or the officers being complacent, I am unsure.

Yeah, now if we could just get them to issue EVERY officer a stab proof vest.

Yeah, no doubt about that Swattie. It's pretty sad that in a maximum security prison that has been in operation for 17 years did not even issue any stab vests until August of last year. The vests are only issued to segregation cell house staff. I guess in their infinite wisdom, seg. is the only dangerous place to work. Those of us who are sent to deal with the inmates that the regular line staff can't handle, aren't even given the option to acquire a vest. Go figure. I guess when one of my officers or I get stabbed up real good, they will make it mandatory that all staff wear a stab vest and money will become no issue.

At least y'all got them in Seg. My facility has been around for 100 years and we still only have them for SORT during "situations".
