I am for any LAW ABIDING person to own a gun. Criminals already have them and the guns laws have not kept them out of anyone's hands.

Rather than create more laws restricting people further who already obey the laws, make harder punisments for those that violate the gun laws. ENFORCE the laws ALREADY on the books!!!

I'm also for LAW ABIDING citizens to carry. We have to remember that Police can't be everywhere at all times. We have to be able to protect ourselves and our loved ones. I'm also for teaching our children about guns. They not only need to KNOW how to handle a gun but also how to use one. If children are taught PROPERLY than they will learn to respect the gun and not be afraid. My kids have always been around them and they all know how to use one CORRECTLY. Our youngest is even on the Rifle Team for the ROTC at school and has won many 1st, 2nd and 3rd places for shooting.

I can't say that I am for "any" law abiding citizen owning a gun. I've seen plenty of people that shouldn't. I do agree that gun laws do nothing to stop the use of guns in criminal activities. Gun laws only keep guns out of the hands of law abiding citizens.

I don't have a problem shooting someone if they break in to my home. And after I'm done I'll let my Rottie and Border Collie have him (they love to play tug a war)! I know that without a doubt when my son had to confront someone with a gun while we were gone he would have been able to do what it takes to protect himself.

Just the other day I was at the gas station in line behind someone. He was wearing a red shirt, red cap (to the side) and when I looked at the SOB (small of back) I saw a gun. He was about 19 or 20 and in a gang. I stepped back to see if he had "company" (didn't) and watched until he left. THIS is WHY I'm getting my CCL. I'm NOT gonna be a victim or wait until the police arrive because they can't be everywhere at all times.

I'm not entirely sure I understand your message clearly here... so I'm going to take a step back on this one.

Lets start at the start: Do you have a FOID card? Own a firearm? Understand the process one has to go through to get licensed to own a firearm? Additionally, the process one has to go through to carry?

not just "anyone" can do it.

I have been in federal law enforcement for the majority of my adult life. So, I have never had to endure the process that a non-law enforcement person must in order to carry a gun. I grew up in NY, so I do understand it is not easy. Now, maybe I misunderstood the full intent of the message I was initially responding to, but I don't think that every law abiding citizen has the capacity to use a gun and therefore should not just own one because they can. My point is simply that, not everyone has the mental, physical, maturity-level, etc to own a gun. There needs to be a process to ensure proper training and care (locking them away from children) for those law-abiding citizens that do choose to own a gun. But the process and laws in general do nothing to stop people like the "gentleman" Swattie's Wife encountered.
