New Passport Requirements, are they necessary?

For Citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda
Beginning January 23, 2007, citizens of the United States, Canada, Mexico, and Bermuda will be required to present a passport to enter the United States when arriving by air from any part of the Western Hemisphere.

Do you feel this is overkill, or is it ok?

This is okay, due to the fact there are so many counterfeit documents and a person can misrepresent themselves to you. Its a great idea that passports have to be presented to entering the US. This way it gives the officer some additional time to speak to the person in front of them and determine if they might be hiding something. Also it provisdes the travler the burden of poof to enter the country. Even though they may be a USC, there might be something that was missed before but not caught due to a clsoer inspection.

Unless you work for immigration, or one of the many who abuse it. I guess you never think about it. Since I have no need to abuse the system like many visitors. You get a wider perspective how messed up and how many loop holes there are in the system for the abusers. 1yr and learning
