Haven't had time to browse all the answers so far, so I'll just jump to my prefs.
I carried a Colt .45 for 16 years. First a 1911, then a LW Commander, then got one of the first steel frame commanders that came out. I polished the ramp and chamber, beefed up the recoil spring, and loaded my own. I saw too many comrades get hurt or killed due to faulty ammo from the mfg.
My loads were 12 grains of Unique pushing a 185 gr. Hornady hp, and they chrono'd at 1153fps....not slow, and definitely not shabby. No overpenetration, even on arm and leg shots, so that made them relatively safe in the population.
I currently have a Kimber. It's a good weapon, but I'm still partial to the Colt, mainly because it can take a lickin and keep on tickin....better than a timex anytime.
