LA County Sheriff Academy

I am Looking to Apply for the academy, However I want to be physically fit and study for the exam prior to joining the academy so I do not stress on the little issues.

Does anyone know the exact Physical Training Test Requirements for "LA County"
EX: How many push ups/sit ups in a minute or even mile times?

I currently work out daily, lift weights and run, I just need those benchmark goals to train by.

Thanks from SoCal,

I believe this is the document that you need, my friend.

http://www.ptb.state.il.us/pdf/POWER.pdf

the Peace Officer Wellness Evaluation Report SHOULD tell you all you need to know about the testing procedures administered to people before they are admitted into the police academy.

Good luck!

I don't know if it has changed (probably hasn't) but I have friend that works for LA Police Department. He can't live in the same district that he works. It's for the protection of the officers and their families.

Best of luck!

I wasn't aware that they had that regulation.

I would just recommend pushups, situps, pullups, and running. These things will pretty much get you ready for anything.

I concur with this sentiment. I also want to help Swattie convey what is crucial: A balance of your physical being; of your fitness.

If you are very strong, but you lack mobility, a light suspect may get away from you.

If you are very fast but not so strong, (Or, not disciplined in some art of hand-to-hand combat) you may find yourself bested in the line of duty by a very skilled combatant. In absolute worst case scenarios, one of your own weapons could be used against you.

I personally run on intervals (sprint/jog/sprint/jog etc) to develop cardiovascular strength, sprint to develop burst speed, run distance to develop stamina, and so on.

I also do Bicep curls, Free-weight bench press, (individual weights for each hand) Shoulder lifts, lots of work on my abdominal core, as this is where most of your power, or lack thereof, will come from, and a great deal of flexibility training. Flexibility is synonymous with injury prevention. What will not stretch, will tear.

Oh, and, a side note on bicep curls: I suggest using free weights to develop your bicep. (this applies to developing your pectorals and triceps as well) Using free weights to develop your upper body will encourage a great balance in strength and control throughout all of the muscle groups in your arms. I personally feel that this is crucial, and my opinion is supported by two certified personal trainers. You are not lifting to brag to your buddies about how high your numbers are in the gym. You are lifting to protect human life, both yourself and the people in your place of duty.

Just a few things that I feel are important...

The friend that told me this said it was because an officer arrested someone and the BG said that when he was out he was coming after him and his family. Well, I don't know one LEO that hasn't gotten one of those "promises". When the guy was released from jail he followed the officer until he got off work and followed him home. The BG shot and killed the officer and his entire family (I guess he had 2 small children). Like I said I don't know if that restriction has been lifted or is still in place.

That is why 1)I carry off duty EVERYWHERE!!!!!! and 2) If I think someone is following me, guess what I have a cell phone and all I have to do is dial 911 and say something to the effect of "This is Officer *insert last name here* from *insert agency here* and I have a vehicle that is following me, I have made X number of turns and gone in a circle around the block (which I would do just to make sure no one is following me). I am in fear for my safety the vehicle is a *insert make/model and license plate*. I am traveling *insert direction/road name of travel*, can you send an officer out to stop this vehicle.

I CAN GURENTEE YOU THAT WITHIN 5MINUTES OR LESS, I WILL HAVE ONE OR MORE OF MY BROTHERS IN BLUE STOPPING THAT VEHICLE. That is what I love about this job, if I am getting my ass kicked in a fight, all I have to say is 10-33 over the radio, and I have a minimum of 5-6 officers coming to my aid.

It's the same way in corrections. You'd think that the inmates would LEARN that when they start something withe a CO that we AUTOMATICALLY push the "talk button". You hate hearing that come across the radio that one of your coworkers needs help. I remember this one juvenile that was in for murder. He liked to start things with the female CO's. The one (of many) times that he came after me he ended up being rolled like a "human burrito". He then begins yelling "when I get out I'm gonna find you and kill you." I just look at him and say "would you like directions with my address or do you think you can find it by yourself?" Shuts him right up. With all the crap I had to put up with there I actually didn't mind the juvies. I HATED the admin people!
